Last week, Emmy, a pit bull mix, was left all by herself outside in Ecorse, Michigan where the temperature dropped below zero degrees Celsius. Her family abandoned her during a blizzard which left the scared and elderly dog no choice but to protect herself from the cold by curling up for warmth and hoping that someone would come to her rescue. Thankfully, rescuers were able to spot her just as it started snowing, and she was saved. According to P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue board member, Lauren Boesen, Emmy had stayed outside for approximately 36 hours in harsh weather conditions with temperatures ranging from negative 17 degrees Celsius to 30 mph winds.
Emmy, a rescued dog, is currently under the care of P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue. Her rescue was a joint effort among various organizations who worked together to rescue her from the cold and provide her with the necessary medical attention. The Friends of River Rouge Animal Shelter discovered Emmy’s situation and reached out for help on social media. The director of The PAWS Clinic, a local spay and neuter clinic, responded by offering to transport the dog to the vet. The veterinary team at Pet Care Clinic Lincoln Park examined Emmy and found that she was severely malnourished. Despite initial concerns about her survival, Emmy is now receiving the care she needs to recover.
Emmy was malnourished, covered in fleas, and had sores on her knees and elbows. Veterinary specialists estimated she was around 8 or 9 years old and likely spent a long time confined in a cage. It was evident that she had a difficult past. Upon closer inspection, it was clear that Emmy needed immediate emergency veterinary care. Fortunately, her P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue friends stepped in. Some of their board members took time out of their day to pick her up from the vet and drive her to the emergency clinic. Despite being curled up in a ball in the back of the car, Emmy was in good hands and on her way to getting the help she needed.
Emmy was swiftly taken to the emergency vet team after being rescued from an icy roadway. The team’s main objectives were to raise her body temperature and tend to her wounds since she was still feeling cold. As soon as they laid eyes on Emmy, the emergency vet crew instantly fell in love with the sweet girl. Boesen shared that the team described Emmy as a cheerful pup who greeted everyone who tended to her with a wagging tail. By Saturday morning, Emmy had successfully regained control of her body temperature and was deemed fit to be placed in a foster family. Boesen was amazed by how rapidly Emmy’s personality blossomed within a day as she picked her up to take her home.
According to Boesen, as soon as they entered the lobby of P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue, the dog came to greet them with her tail wagging. She even called for other people in the foyer to pet her. Then Boesen and Emmy continued their journey to her foster home where she settled in quickly and comfortably.
Boesen shared that when he brought Emmy to their shelter, she immediately made her way towards the sofa. He was pleasantly surprised by her behavior. Boesen felt that Emmy was ready for a forever home and fortunately, a foster family was waiting to welcome her with open arms. Even though Emmy’s stay with them is temporary, she is already receiving all the love and care she deserves. Two days after being rescued, Emmy was seen cuddling with her foster dog siblings under a Christmas tree, wearing matching holiday pajamas.
In a couple of weeks, Emmy will be prepared to go back to foster care, and Boesen is optimistic that she will find a forever family. According to Boesen, Emmy is a wonderful young lady and deserves the best in life.
